Top 5 Differences between Single Phase Motors and Three Phase Motors

Depending on machine types and its applications, different kinds of motors are used nowadays. There are two types of motor – single phase induction motor and three phase induction motor. A three-phase induction motor is used in the applications that require large horsepower, whereas single-phase motors are best for the ones that need less horsepower for their operation.
Before you look forward to buying a motor for your machine, it is crucial that you know the difference between single phase and three phase induction motor. In this guide, we are going to discuss the same.
Difference between Single phase and three phase induction motor:
1.Power Source: A 1-phase motor runs on a single phase power source, whereas a 3-phase motor works on the three-phase power source. A 3 phase induction motor can run on a single phase power source, but it will not possess a self-start mechanism.

2.Self-Start Mechanism:
A single phase motor does not have a rotating filed. Hence, they require some starting mechanism. On the other hand, a three-phase motor has a rotating field, due to which its phase sequence can be changed easily. They are self-starting.

3.Torque: Single phase motors have no significant starting torque. In this motor, a capacitor is used to make a phase difference between two fluxes of the running and starting windings. On the contrary, a three-phase motor has high starting torque that varies with the ratings. As the rating increase or decrease, starting torque will also increase or decrease respectively.

4.Structure:
Single phase motors are simple in construction as compared to three-phase motors. Due to this, single phase motors are reliable and economical. Furthermore, single phase motors repair and maintenance is much easier than three-phase motors.

5.Efficiency: 1-phase motors are suitable for the applications that require less horsepower. When you run them at high horsepower, it decreases their efficiency. But, for high horsepower applications, 3-phase induction motor works well.
These are the major differences between single phase and three phase induction motor. You can also differentiate on the basis of applications. For instance, for domestic applications, single phase motor suits the best, but for commercial applications, 3 phase motors work well. If you are looking for a store to buy a single phase motor, then MM Engineering Services can turn out to be the best option.

Difference between the Low & High Voltage Products

All of us are never bothered about the electrical system used at our houses. We hardly know what are low voltage and high voltage product...
